For Members and Guests of FEIN e.V. – Cost-free, registration not required
- Friday, 26.09.2025
- 14:00 - 16:00 CEST
- Room 00.21 – EON.ERC – Mathieustr. 30, 52074 Aachen

Moderator:
Prof. Antonello Monti, ACS, Fraunhofer FIT & FEIN
Presenter and Panelist:
Steffen Vogel, OPAL-RT Germany GmbH
In the first part of the event, the speaker presents an overview about VILLAS and demonstrates its usability with a tutorial. Afterwards, Prof. Monti moderates a discussion with the speaker, who will be answering questions of the audience. The event will be held in English.
This talk introduces VILLASframework, an open-source software that enables seamless data exchange between real-time simulations, measurement systems, and control applications. Through a practical demo, Steffen Vogel will showcase how the framework connects heterogeneous platforms and supports research and industrial use cases in digital energy systems. The session highlights both technical features and application perspectives, offering insights into the role of VILLASframework in advancing interoperability and real-time experimentation.
About the speaker, Steffen Vogel

He started his career as a Research Associate at the Institute for Automation of Complex Power Systems and was a leading developer of VILLASframework and contributed to other tools for co-simulation and real-time simulation. He transitioned to industry in 2023 when joining OPAL-RT Germany GmbH, where he now serves as R&D Software Specialist, and is closely working with the development of software that powers the real-time simulation hardware and interfaces. He continues to develop VILLASframework until today and is also actively engaged in other open-source communities and has contributed to numerous projects at the intersection of power systems and information technology.
